CHAPTER THIRTEEN
WHAT IN THE world had gotten into him?
More than a week had passed since Cristo had bared his troubled soul to Kyra. And it hadn’t made things better. It’d made them worse. It’d dredged up all of the horrific memories he kept locked away in the back of his mind. And when he faced Kyra, she was quiet and reserved. It wasn’t just his father. Now that Kyra knew the truth, she’d withdrawn from him, too. Not that he could blame her.
Cristo moved to the bar in the suite and refilled his mug with freshly brewed coffee. His second pot that morning. And he still didn’t feel like himself.
He hadn’t slept well in days. He spent his nights tossing and turning. There had been no getting comfortable. All he could think about was Kyra.
They’d gotten so much closer than he’d ever intended. Even to the point where she had him opening up about his past—something he never shared with anyone. And something he would never do again.
In the daylight hours, he continued his search for her family. He was more invested in the quest now than ever before. He needed to know that when this arrangement was over that Kyra would be all right. Because try as he might, he still hadn’t convinced her to speak to her mother.
Though it was still early, Cristo had placed a call to the private investigator. He normally received weekly reports on Monday afternoons, but he had no patience to wait until after lunch. This search for Kyra’s family had hit too many dead ends. They were due for a bit of good luck—at least Kyra was due it.
The conversation was short but fruitful. Cristo clenched his hand and pumped his arm as the PI gave him their first valid lead. Cristo assured the man he would personally follow up on the findings.
Determined to see this plan enacted immediately, he grabbed his phone and called his PA. He canceled all of his meetings that day. He had something more important to do. And though his PA sputtered on about the number of important meetings he would be missing, he didn’t care. For once, he was putting something—rather someone—else ahead of his own business agenda. Something his father would never do.
Kyra strolled out of her bedroom, yawning as she headed for the coffeepot.
She eyed up his khaki shorts and polo shirt. “Is it casual dress day at the office?”
“No. I’m not working today.”
“Really?” Her fine brows rose. “Has there been a global disaster? Is it the end of the world?”
“Kyra, stop.” He didn’t realize he’d turned out more like his father than he’d ever intended. A frown tugged at his lips. “Why does there have to be something wrong for me to take the day off?
“It’s just that in all the time I’ve known you, you’ve never voluntarily taken a day off. So I figure something big must have happened.”
Perhaps he’d been a bit too driven where his work was concerned. “It just so happens that I have other plans today.
